Dear Husky Families,
As we begin another exciting school year, I want to take a moment to share our school-wide expectations that guide student behavior and help build a positive learning environment. At Highlands, we follow the LEAD framework, which stands for:
- Live Responsibly
- Engage Safely
- Act Respectfully
- Display Kindness
These expectations are more than just rules—they are values we strive to instill in every student. Whether in the classroom, on the playground, or in the cafeteria, students are encouraged to make choices that reflect responsibility, safety, respect, and kindness.
For example, “Live Responsibly” might mean completing homework on time or helping clean up after an activity. “Engage Safely” includes using materials appropriately and being mindful of others’ personal space. “Act Respectfully” and “Display Kindness” are seen in how students speak to one another, listen, and support their peers.
We invite you to reinforce these expectations at home by discussing what each one means and recognizing your child when they demonstrate these behaviors. Together, we can help our students grow into thoughtful, confident leaders.
Warm regards,
Jodi Gonzalez and Robert Adamowicz
Proud Principal and Assistant Principal of Highlands Elementary

Parents,
We need your help! We have noticed an increase in our students breaking SCPS Dress Code.
Please review the SCPS guidelines and help us by making sure your child's dress is appropriate for school. Highlands Elementary will provide alternative attire if necessary.
Excerpt from SCPS Appearance & Dress Code Section of the Student Code of Conduct:
Clothing Coverage: Clothing must fully cover areas from one armpit to the other armpit, down to the thigh. Lower garments must completely cover the buttocks at all times. All tops must have shoulder straps, be long enough to cover the waistline, and must not expose the midriff or undergarments at any time. (See the diagram above for reference).

Please review our arrival procedures. It has been running fairly smooth for the first week of school, however a few tweaks will help it run more consistently. We ask that all parents stay in the car and student exit out of the door closest to the school, this will allow for the safest drop off for your student and our staff members. We also operate a single line drop off, which is the right lane (drops off closest to the building). Zooming through in the left lane is not going to make any friends and will also NOT allow you to drop off faster.

Thank you to both car pick up and walker parents! As stated above we are dismissing over 100+ cars in less than 20 minutes is extremely impressive. Parents of walkers, thank you for waiting by the bus gate exit, this allows students to get their bikes/scooters and move out with out being bottle necked as they leave. Parents of Car Riders, thank you for having you car tags displayed for our staff to quickly input student names. In the afternoon, since we operate a two lane dismissal, please use both lanes but DO NOT jump lane to lane before or after picking up, as it is a safety hazard and also may delay the pickup of your student.

Over the past week, our students have been learning about Habit 3: Put First Things First and Habit 4: Think Win-Win—two powerful habits that help children build responsibility and empathy.
Habit 3 teaches kids to prioritize what’s most important, like schoolwork, chores, and family time, before play or screen time. In class, students practiced organizing their day and identifying tasks that help them reach their goals. For example, one student shared how they now finish homework before watching TV, showing great self-management!
Habit 4 encourages children to seek solutions where everyone benefits. It’s about cooperation, kindness, and understanding that success isn’t a competition. In class, we explored scenarios like sharing toys or working together on group projects. Students learned that when they listen and compromise, everyone feels valued. One group even created a “Win-Win Wall” to celebrate moments of teamwork and fairness.
How Parents Can Support at Home:
- For Habit 3, try creating a simple daily schedule with your child. Let them help decide what tasks come first, and celebrate when they stick to it!
- For Habit 4, encourage your child to talk through disagreements with siblings or friends. Ask questions like, “How can you both be happy with the outcome?” or “What’s a fair solution?”
By modeling these habits and celebrating small successes, you help your child grow into a thoughtful, responsible leader. Let’s keep the momentum going—together!

Did you know that children can suffer academically if they miss 10% of the school year? If a student misses 2 days a month, that is equivalent to 20 days a year (30 hours of math a year and 60 hours of reading/writing a year). Those days can add up before you know it. We know there will be days when your child will miss school, especially when they are sick. Let’s work together to make sure that students are at school on time every day!
Parents and families are essential partners in promoting good attendance because they have the bottom-line responsibility for making sure their children get to school every day. Just as parents should focus on how their children are performing academically, they have a responsibility to set expectations for good attendance and to monitor their children’s absences, so that missed days don’t add up to academic trouble.
Helpful Tips for Awesome Attendance:
•Build regular routines for bedtime and the morning
•Talk about the importance of regular attendance and about how your child feels about school
•Don’t permit missing school unless your child is truly sick. Use a thermometer to check for a fever. Remember that stomach aches and headaches may be signs of anxiety
•Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session
•Keep a chart recording your child’s attendance at home. At the end of the week, talk with your child about what you see
•Develop back up plans to get to school if something comes up. Ask a family member, neighbor, or another parent for help
•Seek support from school staff or community groups to help with transportation, health problems, or if you have no safe path to school.
Remember students may arrive on campus at 8:05 AM for breakfast and the bell rings at 8:35AM.

We appreciate any support as we begin the new school year. We can use extra goodies for our PBIS incentives. We also like to surprise our teachers and stock the fridge/teacher's lounge with sodas and coffees here and there.
We appreciate any and all support!
